Whether our moms have had a funeral at funeral homes or they are still alive, we have much to celebrate about having them in our lives. Moms are often the hub of the family and that role should be celebrated, not just on Mother’s Day, but every day of our lives.
We may have complicated relationships with our moms at times in our lives, but they are always there to pick up the pieces when we need them to and to help us get back on our feet when life has knocked us down.
Famous people have talked about their moms in a way that capture the essence of their role in the life of their families, and especially their children. These are food for thought and reasons to celebrate our moms.
The author Victor Hugo (Les Miserables) had this to say about moms: “A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.”
Writer and activist Maya Angelo said this about her mom: “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow”
Washington Irving, who wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow among other things, gave his take on moms: “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens arounds us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
The flamboyant British writer Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Gray) had this to say about moms: “All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his.”
The author of Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom, had this to say about moms: “I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know.”
In Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendall Homes’ assessment of moms, he wrote: “Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mothers secret hope outlives them all.”
Caroline Kennedy had this to say about her mom, Jackie Onassis (widow of President John Kennedy): “My mother…had a very deep inner spirituality that allowed her to rebuild her life. It’s extraordinary that she had such a strong sense of self and such a commitment to the future and a strong creative sense that she could build new worlds for herself and us out of the total devastation of her life.”
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice shared this about her mom: “My parents elected me president of the family when I was 4. We actually had an election every year and I always won. I’m an only child, and I could count on my mother’s vote.”
Basketball great Michael Jordan revealed who his mom is to him: “My mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed that I base my life on, and that is the belief that the ability to achieve starts in your mind.”
Actor Jason Segel said this about his mom: “My mother taught me to be nice to everybody. And she said something before I left home. She said, ‘I want you to always remember that the person you are in this world is a reflection of the job I did as a mother.’”
